Our Second Decade - The 1940s
The 1940s were a challenging decade for JLT. World War II imposed an "entertainment tax" that forced JLT to raise its season ticket price the considerable sum of 20 cents and caused a number of actors to be almost literally marched from our Stage. While most community theaters went dark during this time, Janesville Little Theater made a commitment to keep serving the community during wartime, though their output of plays was greatly diminished. One one play was produced in all of 1944. They adopted the slogan "In War As In Peace" to signify their belief that the show must go on.
By the end of this decade attendance was improving, the theatre had graduated its first actor to the professional stage, and it seemed like its best years lie ahead.
